Life In Christ

Holiness, joy, peace, safety...everything we hunger for is found only in the presence of God. Scripture describes this, from the Garden of Eden to the tabernacle to the temple and finally to heaven, where God will live with His people. But the presence of God is experienced most intensely in the incarnation of Christ and the union of Christ with His disciples, through faith. In Christ, as Christ lives in us, we experience the strength and hope that we've been searching for.

Using the scripture below, follow the trail from the presence of God in the Old Testament to our union with Christ in the New Testament. Watch how the Spirit weaves our life with the life of Jesus.

In addition, Andrew Murray, a pastor/theologian who lived over 100 years ago, wrote a beautiful devotional that helps to strengthen this union. Using Jesus' illustration of the vine and the branches in John 15, Murray encourages us to remain, to abide, and to let the life of Jesus flow into us. Union with Christ

John 1:14 - The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.

Romans 6:5 - If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection.

Romans 6:8-11 - if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10 The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. 11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Romans 7:4 NLT - So, my dear brothers and sisters, this is the point: You died to the power of the law when you died with Christ. And now you are united with the one who was raised from the dead. As a result, we can produce a harvest of good deeds for God.

Romans 8:10-11 - if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

Romans 8:37-39 - in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 12:4,5 - Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others

1 Corinthians 1:30 NLT - God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin.

Ephesians 1:11-14 - In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12 in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.

Ephesians 1:18-23 -  I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, 20 which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

2 Peter 1:4 - His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

Your real, new self (which is Christ's & also yours) won't come as long as you are looking for it. It will come when you are looking for Him - CS Lewis

To become new means losing what we now call ‘ourselves’. Out of our selves, into Christ, we must go." - C. S. Lewis

Therefore, to that union of the head and members, the residence of Christ in our hearts, in fine, the mystical union, we assign the highest rank, Christ when he becomes ours making us partners with him in the gifts with which he was endued. Hence we do not view him as at a distance and without us, but as we have put him on, and been ingrafted into his body, he deigns to make us one with himself, and, therefore, we glory in having a fellowship of righteousness with him – John Calvin, Institutes, 3.11.10

In this fallen state, human beings seek their identity “in themselves” or “in the flesh.” They seek to be human apart from God. But of course, that is simply repeating the sin of Adam—following one’s own wisdom rather than lovingly trusting in God. While fallen humans share the accidental characteristic of sinning, this characteristic does not completely vanquish the imago Dei, which Calvin says is a “participation in God. – J.
